Accessibility

Built to be usable by everyone.

Effective May 1, 2026.

Our commitment

Kindness Counts is committed to making this platform usable by people of all abilities. We target conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, the standard cited by the U.S. Department of Justice for digital accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act and adopted by Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.

What we have implemented

  • Keyboard navigation across every interactive element on the public site and the volunteer dashboard.
  • Semantic HTML structure, with proper heading hierarchy and landmark roles for screen reader users.
  • Color contrast ratios that meet or exceed WCAG 2.1 AA on text and interactive controls.
  • Form fields with associated labels and accessible error messaging.
  • Focus indicators visible on all interactive elements.
  • Alternative text on informational images.
  • Reduced-motion respect: users with the operating-system setting “reduce motion” enabled will see ambient animations disabled.
  • Text resizable up to 200% without loss of content or functionality.

Known limitations

We do not yet claim full WCAG 2.1 AA conformance. Known limitations we are actively working on:

  • Geolocation-based check-in flows have not been independently tested with assistive technology in real event conditions. Coordinator-assisted manual check-in is available as an alternative for volunteers who cannot complete a GPS-based check-in.
  • The audit-packet print view has not yet been tested with every common screen reader. Volunteers, coordinators, and auditors can request a structured JSON export as an alternative format.
  • We do not yet provide a captioned-video onboarding experience.

Report a barrier or request an alternative format

If you encounter a barrier using Kindness Counts, or need an alternative format for any document on the platform, including waivers, receipts, or grant-ready reports, contact us:

  • Email: accessibility@kindnesscounts.io
  • Response target: five business days.
  • Please describe the barrier, the page or feature where it occurred, the device and assistive technology you were using, and the outcome you were trying to achieve.

Coordinator-assisted alternative

Every event on Kindness Counts supports coordinator-assisted check-in. A volunteer who cannot complete the standard GPS and time-bound code flow can be checked in by an event coordinator, with a documented reason recorded on the audit log. The resulting record is still a verified record, with confidence-level “confirmed” rather than “verified.”

Formal accessibility complaint

If you believe Kindness Counts has discriminated against you on the basis of disability, you may file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice under the Americans with Disabilities Act at civilrights.justice.gov. California residents may also contact the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing.
